Historic Interiors Conservator
De Nollen, Den Helder–
This project was carried out as part of the Advanced Professional Programme (APP) in Conservation & Restoration at the University of Amsterdam. The focus was on the conservation of Vergilius, an architectural structure that forms part of a larger complex of twelve buildings and sculptures created by artist Ruud van de Wint.
The oil-based wall paintings inside Vergilius were in urgent need of treatment, exhibiting extensive flaking, surface dirt, and structural instability. The painted surfaces were carefully cleaned and consolidated, and losses were visually reintegrated to restore the aesthetic continuity of the space.
In parallel, material research was conducted on the deteriorated paint layers, including FTIR spectroscopy and microscopical analysis, to better understand the causes of damage and inform future conservation strategies.
